چکیده
Whip scorpions (Thelyphonida) and schizomids (Schizomida) are closely related arachnid orders, whose low species diversity compared to other groups is reflected in a limited fossil record. Here we investigate two key whip from the British Middle Coal Measures of Coseley, Staffordshire (late Carboniferous, c. 315 Ma), UK, using X-ray microtomography, incorporate taxa into an updated phylogeny. Geralinura brittanica Pocock, Citation1911 unequivocal scorpion, pedipalps closer modern condition than previously assumed. The trochanter bears dorsal flange with prodorsal teeth, whole pedipalp rendered subchelate by presence at least patellar apophysis. These results suggest high degree stasis since late genus Geralinula Scudder, Citation1884 within crown-group; i.e. extant family Thelyphonidae. Proschizomus petrunkevitchi Dunlop Horrocks, Citation1996 lacks median eyes, character shared Schizomida, but unlike also has tibial apophyses; albeit appendage articulating angle 45° rather horizontally as living scorpions, or vertically schizomids. Our phylogeny refutes previous hypothesis that P. stem-schizomid, places it among instead. However, may have branched early scorpion lineage, thus its morphology might reflect plesiomorphic arrangement which were transitioning more leg-like fully raptorial claw-like set prey-catching appendages.

New products of defense secretion in south east Asian whip scorpions (Arachnida: Uropygi: Thelyphonida).
Secretion products from the opisthosomal defense gland of south east Asian whip scorpions were identified for the first time by gas-chromatography and mass-spectrometry. Specimens of the genera Hypoctonus, Typopeltis and Ginosigma were tested. While some ingredients are present in large concentrations, others are possibly only side products and may be synthesized more incidentally. For this rea...

The experiments dealt with in this paper were devised to ascertain (1) the relative effectiveness as photoreceptors of the whip-tail scorpion's median eyes, lateral eye groups, and cutaneous sensitive areas, and (2) the effect on orientation produced by symmetrical and by asymmetrical interference with the photoreceptive mechanism. Each of the receptors was eliminated unilaterally and bilateral...

Progress in high-resolution X-ray microtomography has provided us with a practical approach to determining three-dimensional (3D) structures of opaque samples at micrometer to submicrometer resolution. In this review, we give an introduction to hard X-ray microtomography and its application to the visualization of 3D structures of biological soft tissues. Practical aspects of sample preparation...
